The concept of having a source being available throughout a home has been around for
a very long time. Think of it as you would cable television. You have one item being fed to every room equipped for it - just plug in a TV and you can see and hear the channel selected. Distributing audio and video works on the same concept, which is that of feeding the sound and/or images from one or more sources to multiple locations. |
|
Imagine having a multi-disc CD changer that you can play in any room in your home,
or perhaps two FM Tuners (a 'his' and 'hers') so that you can pick your own station to listen to.
There are various ways to send these signals throughout a home. Some are very
basic and allow no control beyond selecting a source and possibly adjusting the volume. In the mid to high end there are systems that allow control of not only volume, but direct access to the commands of the equipment (play, stop, pause, next disc, etc.). Some even allow you to see information as to the radio station you're listening to, which song is playing on the jukebox and what will play next.
Line-level audio signals (like those coming directly out of your CD player's RCA jacks)
can be sent over long distances using CAT5 cable and 'Send' and 'Receive' hardware. This is very beneficial if equipment happens to be located in different parts of a house. |
|
Video distribution is very similar to that of audio, except for the type of cable used and
the equipment to send the signals. Video can now be sent from one location to another over CAT5 cable in just about any format - composite, SVHS and Component (including HDTV).
With standard methods of signal distribution (Coax cable), video sources (along with
the audio portion of their signal) can be converted and added to your existing coax cable system. Depending on the brand, the use of modulators allow a source to be output on various TV channels. You simply tune your TV to the correct channel and the Living Room DVD player is now visible in the bedroom!
There are some limitations to modulating signals - the type of cable service you have
and the bandwidth they use, available channels, signal strength issues relating to how your home was originally wired, etc.
There are systems now available that not only let you see and control central video
sources (such as a DVD multi-player), but also access and control sources located in other rooms around the home. While considered to be in the upper-end of the industry (and priced accordingly), this type of system allows complete flexibility as to where equipment is located while providing complete control of it. |
